Individual therapy

I practice therapy that focuses on self understanding. Understanding why you think, feel, and act in certain characteristic ways allows for lasting change. This kind of understanding comes from exploring your life history, the cultural and societal contexts in which you exist, internal conflicts, relational patterns, your hopes & fears, and ways of being.

The way I practice draws on my undergraduate and graduate education in philosophy, counselling, and psychology. I have received post-graduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the William Alanson White Inst and I am undergoing further training as a Fellow of the Psychoanalytic Inst of New England.

Most importantly I recognize that effective therapy requires the development of a real relationship based on trust, curiosity, and courage.

“From my perspective, the main threat to traditional therapeutic values is the pervasive message that psychotherapists should not be trying to understand and mend the broken heart, or heal the tortured soul, or promote the acceptance of painful realities. Instead, we should be trying to medicate, manage, reeducate, control, and correct the irrational behaviour of people whose suffering is inconvenient to the larger culture.”
